Greensburg, PA – This press release is being issued by Westmoreland Cultural Trust on behalf of Westmoreland Garden Council, a valued long-time tenant and partner located at the Trust-managed Greensburg Garden & Civic Center.
The organization formerly known as the Greensburg Garden Center is proud to announce its return to its original name, the Westmoreland Garden Council. For over fifty-five years, the organization has served the Greensburg community from its home in the Greensburg Garden & Civic Center, which was originally built by the visionary Katherine McKenna in 1969. The building was conceived to house and support several of Mrs. McKenna’s favorite organizations, and at her request, the Westmoreland Garden Council adopted the name Greensburg Garden Center in homage to the civic center.
“We are excited to honor our origins with the name change,” said [Spokesperson’s Name, Title]. “The Westmoreland Garden Council remains committed to the mission we’ve upheld for decades: to educate and engage our community in horticulture, conservation, and environmental stewardship.”
As an established 501(c)3 organization, the Westmoreland Garden Council is dedicated to enriching the community’s understanding and appreciation of horticulture. Through educational programs, public events, and outreach, the council promotes environmental awareness and sustainability. Monthly educational sessions, held on the first Tuesday of each month, are open to the public and cover a wide range of topics, from plant care to conservation. In addition, the organization offers an annual scholarship to a college student pursuing studies in a related field.
In celebration of the name restoration, the Westmoreland Garden Council has several upcoming events planned to engage the community, including the annual Christmas Greens Sale on December 6-7, 2024, which will feature fresh greens and unique designs. The always-popular Spring Tea is scheduled for March 15, 2025, and later in the summer, the Monarch Butterfly Release in August is expected to draw hundreds to the council’s butterfly garden, raising awareness about the importance of pollination and conservation.
Community members can look forward to further updates on social media as the organization transitions to its original name.
